چکیده

We discuss Boltzmann’s probabilistic explanation of the second law of thermodynamics, providing a comprehensive presentation of what is called today the typicality account. Countering its misconception as an alternative explanation, we examine the relation between Boltzmann’s H-theorem and the general typicality argument, demonstrating the conceptual continuity between the two. We then discuss the philosophical dimensions of the concept of typicality and its relevance for scientific reasoning in general, in particular for understanding the reduction of macroscopic laws to microscopic laws. Finally, we reply to recent criticisms of the typicality account. ∗[email protected][email protected]

The Numerical Exergy Analysis of H2/Air Combustion with Detailed Chemical Kinetic Simulation Model

Energy and exergy concepts come from thermodynamics laws and are applicable to all fields of science and engineering. This study considers numerical simulations of combustion of hydrogen with air in a constant pressure environment and exergy terms according to first and second laws analysis using homemade code. Chemical kinetic model includes 20 reactions and 9 species.  At the first stage of p...

Microscopic irreversibility and chaos

© 2006 American Institute of Physics, S-0031-9228-0608-210-X The origin of irreversible behavior is a persistent theme in physics. Since the fundamental microscopic laws, including both Newton’s laws and quantum mechanics, are reversible (except for the weak interactions), the fact that most macroscopic systems behave irreversibly has long been recognized as an important issue. The problem of u...

Irreversibility and the Arrow of Time in a Quenched Quantum System.

Irreversibility is one of the most intriguing concepts in physics. While microscopic physical laws are perfectly reversible, macroscopic average behavior has a preferred direction of time. According to the second law of thermodynamics, this arrow of time is associated with a positive mean entropy production. Using a nuclear magnetic resonance setup, we measure the nonequilibrium entropy produce...

MICROSCOPIC REVERSIBILITY AND MACROSCOPIC BEHAVIOR : PHYSICAL EXPLANATIONS AND MATHEMATICAL DERIVATIONSJoel

The observed general time-asymmetric behavior of macroscopic systems|embodied in the second law of thermodynamics|arises naturally from time-symmetric microscopic laws due to the great disparity between macro and micro-scales. More speciic features of macroscopic evolution depend on the nature of the microscopic dynamics. In particular, short range interactions with good mixing properties lead,...

Macroscopic irreversibility and microscopic paradox: A Constructal law analysis of atoms as open systems

The relation between macroscopic irreversibility and microscopic reversibility is a present unsolved problem. Constructal law is introduced to develop analytically the Einstein's, Schrödinger's, and Gibbs' considerations on the interaction between particles and thermal radiation (photons). The result leads to consider the atoms and molecules as open systems in continuous interaction with flows ...
